How can you best prepare yourself?

Download your airlines app.  If you're traveling on more than one airline, please get both.
Once you check in for your flight, they are responsible for you.  This does not mean I'm not here to help you.  It means that if something happens once you check in, they are responsible for making sure your flight needs are taken care of.  For example- you've checked in and your flight is delayed or canceled, if they try to tell you it's your/my responsibility to make arrangements, that is false.  Unfortunately, you'll be dealing with stressed out and overworked agents who may simply be unaware of what they need to do in order to assist you.
Back to #1- this is why you need the app.  You may well need to be your own advocate at some point and find alternatives on the app should you be delayed.  Most of you booked your flights in conjunction with your cruise and this is helpful because we have an advocate behind the scenes.
If you booked your flights independently, please make sure you are aware of your rights for delayed or canceled flights.  If you miss your flight, they will not compensate you unless it was their error.
IF YOU ARE FLYING to a foreign country- GET THE MPC APP!!!
Mobile Passport Control.  This is life changing!!!  You'll want to use this for when you return to the US and bypass the massive custom lines.  Look for the MPC signs near the customs desks.  
Check in as soon as possible and get there early. Most airlines recommend 3 hours prior. TSA lines can be really long and I'd rather you have too much time than not enough.
You have insurance.  Keep your receipts if you need to purchase anything due to delays or cancellations.  You may be able to get reimbursement depending on the situation and or travel insure you purchased.
In some cases, paying the penalty to change your flight to a non-stop option may be worth it.  Please let me know if you want me to check into this for you.
